Donal O'Keeffe reports from PĂĄirc UĂ Chaoimh

AmhrĂĄn na bhFiann had barely finished when Cork scored their first point and the roaring in the Rebels FanZone SuperValu PĂĄirc UĂ Chaoimh could surely be heard in Croke Park.

The rain held off for the most part for the first part, and the atmosphere was something to behold, with the cheers ebbing and flowing with Cork’s performance.

It was a cracker of a performance, with Cork off to a storming start, and the crowd in PĂĄirc UĂ Chaoimh were clearly having a whale of a time, although the younger fans did seem more interested in running around and having fun.

The fanzone was a big success, even if the numbers were nowhere near the 17,000-plus expected from the number of tickets snapped up for the free event.

An estimate from one garda, later backed up by the GAA control room, suggested approximately 8,000 people were in attendance.

Peter Horgan, newly-elected Labour Party councillor for Cork City South Central, was there with his wife Celine and their children Charlie (5) and Theo (2), and he spoke to The Echo at half-time when both sides were tied at 1-12 to 1-12.

He said he had been the person who had originally proposed the fanzone, and he joked he had done it for selfish reasons, as he wanted to enjoy the match with his family in a community setting and not have to go to a pub.

“This was the vision I had when I got on to the [Cork City Council] executive at the fulltime whistle at the Limerick game in May, an alcohol-free, family event, something for the community in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, watching the hurlers,” he said.

“It’s half-time, it’s all square, and it goes to show that we can do these events in the city, we should be doing more of these events in the city, and hopefully if this all goes to plan for the next 35 minutes, we can do more of these events for other sports, other notable events for the city and the country.”

HALF TIME

It's level at the break in this breathless game.
