A STREET in Cork should be named after the late Bernard Allen to reflect the impact the former Fine Gael minister and Lord Mayor had on the city, Independent Ireland councillor Ken O’Flynn has suggested.

The suggestion follows the funeral of the late Mr Allen earlier this week and is to be the subject of a motion at a forthcoming meeting of Cork City Council.

Mr O’Flynn said he was aware of a convention which normally would allow a number of years to pass after the death of a person before a street or a public structure would be named after that person.

“I think it’s time to revise those rules,” he said, and pointed to the naming of a road on the northside after the late Dave McCarthy, a former Lord Mayor who died in 2011, in 2014.

“The suggested naming of a street after Bernard Allen is a heartfelt endeavor to pay tribute to his unwavering commitment to public service and to ensure that his name and achievements resonate across generations,” said Mr O’ Flynn.
