A SECTION of pavement on a city centre street in Cork remains cordoned off after it was closed overnight by the fire service because of public safety concerns.

Part of the pavement on Parnell Place was closed just after 8pm on Tuesday evening by Cork City Fire Brigade following reports of structural concerns regarding a building on the western side of the street.

The pavement remained fenced and cordoned off outside the Spar shop and the Cycle Repair Centre on Parnell Place on Wednesday morning officials with officials from Cork City Council expected to make a determination as to whether to reopen the section of pavement.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council told The Echo on Wednesday morning: “No decision has been made to reopen the pavement on Parnell Place.

“Building Control will be liaising with building owners this morning.”

It is understood that the issue relates to safety concerns regarding the structural integrity of a chimney stack.
