The achievements of students at Mayfield Community School were recognised at the recent Gradam Awards.

The event, which took place at the school, was aimed at celebrating the “amazing pupils” there.

The Gradam Awards have been running in the school since the late ’70s with the original thinking behind its introduction being to give the school an opportunity to recognise and reward the many excellent personal qualities of students which shine in the day-to-day life of the school.

Past pupil, Stephen Ryan, who is the managing director at Narration, was guest speaker on the night.

The awards night followed a host of recent celebrations at the northside school to mark its 50th anniversary.

Events that have been held in recent weeks included a coffee morning for past pupils, a tree-planting ceremony, and a reception for the class of 1973.

Attention at the school is now turning to the end of term and to the State examinations which commence next week.

This Friday marks the last official day of term with the Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, and Junior Certificate examinations getting underway on June 5.

Funding secured for 94 Cork city community groups

Mayfield Men’s Shed, St Joseph’s Community Association, and Glanmire Area Community Association are among 94 groups in Cork city to secure funding under the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Local Enhancement Programme 2024.

The programme was launched in December 2023, with funding of €6 million available nationally, including €1 million in funding ring-fenced to support women’s groups.

The funding will provide capital supports, essential for the many small community groups and organisations, particularly those who serve disadvantaged areas in rural and urban areas.

Under the programme, a number of projects in the local area have secured funding of between €500 and €5,000.

Mayfield Integrated Community Development Project was awarded €3,500, Mayfield Men’s Shed received €5,000, Mayfield Sports Complex received €2,000, Newbury House Family Centre received €3,241.26 and St Joseph’s Community Association Ltd was awarded €3,000.

Smaller funding amounts were also granted to Ard na Coille Residents (€500), Mayfield Community Adult Learning Project CALP (€900) and Mayfield East Community Association (€700).

In Glanmire, the 46th/92nd Scout Group was awarded €1,000, Glanmire Area Community Association and Glanmire Men’s Shed received €5,000 each, St John’s Ambulance — Glanmire Division — received €1,000 and the Upper Glanmire Community Association received €500.

Announcing the project, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys said that the funding will ensure that work can continue to be delivered by communities.

Riverstown FC seeking planning permission

Riverstown Football Club has lodged a planning application for the erection of new floodlights.

The club is seeking permission from Cork City Council for the erection of six 15m high floodlights.

It is also seeking permission for the removal of a condition in a previously granted application regarding the hours of operation for the club.

A decision on the plans is due by July 2.

Call for community centre Wellbeing Room launched

There are calls for a new community centre to be built in the Glanmire and Ballyvolane area.

Local election candidate for Cork City North East, Shane Ryan, said he is advocating for the development as part of efforts to tackle the issue of anti-social behaviour.

Ryan, a local teacher, says it is important to give children the amenities for them to thrive: “I am advocating for a community centre to be built to serve the Glanmire and Ballyvolane areas.

Being a teacher myself, I know the importance amenities like this play in helping young people live to their full potential.”

Ryan said that support from the surrounding community for the clubs, schools and associations in the area is also crucial to help young people live their lives.
