Cobh murder suspect remanded in custody for further four weeks

A man who has been in custody since March 20 charged with the murder of Cobh chef Ian Baitson has asked that he be allowed to apply for bail.

Dylan Scannell, 30, with an address at O’Rahilly Street, Cobh, Co Cork appeared via video link from Cork Prison before Judge Colm Roberts at Mallow District Court.

Court presenter Sergeant Linda O’Leary said that directions were still awaited from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to allow the case to proceed. She said that the State would be applying to have Mr Scannell remanded in custody for a further four weeks with his consent.

Solicitor David O’Meara acting on behalf of Mr Scannell’s solicitor Ken Murray informed Mr Scannell of the State’s application and asked was he willing to consent to a further four-week period in custody to which Mr Scannell said he was. 

Mr O’Meara said that he would consent to the four week extension of custody but added that Mr Murray would expect some indication of when the case was likely to proceed at the next hearing.

Mr Scannell asked Judge Colm Roberts if he could apply to be released on bail and the judge advised him that he was entitled to do so and should speak to his solicitor about it. 

Judge Roberts said that the State’s request to further extend the period of custody was reasonable and he remanded Mr Scannell in custody with consent to appear again by video link on June 18.

Mr Scannell was charged with the murder of Ian Baitson at Midleton District Court on March 20. 

Ian Baitson suffered serious injuries during an incident in a carpark in Cobh on March 15, he died of his injuries in hospital on March 19.
