A POD of dolphins was spotted in Cork city today by an eagle-eyed dog-walker, who said their presence in the river is a “great encouragement for the environment.”
Keen fisherman, and city local, Gary Dorgan said he was out for a stroll shortly after lunchtime when he caught sight of the majestic creatures surfacing in the water.
“I was out walking with my dog by Mc Madden’s, on the quayside, and I saw movement,” said Mr Dorgan.
“At first I thought it was a whale, but it was a big pod of dolphins.

“They were up and down, they must have been around for a good hour.
“They were feeding off the fish which is obviously a good sign for the harbour,” he added.
“I’m a keen fisherman myself, and I was delighted to see a bit of activity."
“When there’s dolphins in the water, there’s fish there too, and that’s great encouragement for the environment.
“It’s great to see it happening,” he said.
“I remember a few weeks ago there was a pod stuck in the river overnight by George’s Quay, and I was down watching them as well. I was throwing them bits of fish too.
“I’m fairly observant of the river, and it’s good to see a clean harbour,” he said.
