A STATIC speed camera to be located between Lissarda and Ovens on one of Cork’s busiest routes, the N22, is among nine such cameras to be installed on major roads around the country.

It is one of a number of Garda measures to combat the surge in road deaths since the beginning of the year.

The locations for the cameras, which will be rolled out over the next 18 months at an estimated cost of €2.4m, were announced today.

Other roads to see cameras installed include the N69 in Limerick, the N25 in Waterford, the R772 (Wicklow), the N14 (Donegal), the N80 (Carlow), the N17 (Mayo), the N14 (Donegal), the N59 in Galway, and Dolphin’s Barn in Dublin.

The locations for the cameras were selected on the basis of fatal and serious injury collision data from the last seven years, as well as speed data and feedback from stakeholders.

In addition, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has requested that the Assistant Commissioner (Roads Policing) develops a business case for the introduction of a further 100 such cameras.

This business case will then form part of An Garda Síochána’s application for its overall funding in 2025 as part of the Estimates Process.

Assistant Commissioner (Roads Policing and Community Engagement) Paula Hilman said that static speed cameras have been proven in other countries to be highly effective in changing driver behaviour and reducing speed, which is a key contributor to road deaths.

“The lower speeds people drive at, the lower the number of road deaths,” she said.
