EXTENSION and renovation plans for Mayfield Library and St Joseph’s Community Centre have been welcomed as a “positive development” and a “good news story” for the local community.

Cork City Council has published proposals for a major overhaul of the facilities based on Old Youghal Road in Mayfield.

The plans, currently out for public consultation, would see a combined library and community centre entrance foyer via a new extension to Old Youghal Road to the north.

An extension of the library to the east and towards the rear south boundary is also proposed in addition to “extensive” internal and external renovations, internal reconfiguration facilitating shared communal spaces, and public realm upgrades including a new public plaza.

Labour Party councillor in the city’s North East ward, John Maher, welcomed the proposed works.

“It’s great to see plans for the long-awaited extension and improvements for Mayfield Library and St Joseph’s Community Centre.

“The library is an important resource for our community and it’s time that we modernise and upgrade it.

“St Joseph’s Community Centre is a pillar in our community and great to see it also getting an upgrade,” he said.

“The association, led by Derek Connolly, have fought hard to get these improvements so it’s great to see this project progressing and will strengthen our community services.”

Fine Gael councillor Joe Kavanagh also spoke positively about the proposals.

“I very much welcome this development because St Joseph’s Community Centre are a very vibrant organisation and they’re kind of an umbrella group for lots of other micro community organisations such as the Active Retirement Group, the Gramophone Society, the Mayfield No Name Club, and lots of other organisations within the Mayfield area and to have an enhanced facility such the library and St Joseph’s all in one big building in the centre of our community can only be a good news story for our local community,” he said.
