Gardaí seeking witnesses as motorcyclist killed in Cork collision

WITNESSES to a road traffic collision in Cork this evening, which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, are being sought by gardaí.

The man in his 20s died in the incident involving a motorbike and a van on the outskirts of the northside of Cork city.

Gardaí, four units from the Cork City Fire Brigade, and a team from the National Ambulance Service attended the scene at Ballinahina, White's Cross.

The motorcyclist, understood to be aged 25, received medical treatment at the scene, but was pronounced dead. 

His body was transported to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem examination expected to take place. No other serious injuries were reported.

Speaking to The Echo, Cork City Fire Brigade second officer Victor Shine said: “Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene where medical aid was rendered but unfortunately the casualty was pronounced deceased at the incident.”

The road remains closed tonight and is expected to remain closed for a period into tomorrow morning as forensic collision investigators conduct an examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the Ballinahina area between 5:45pm and 6:10pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

This is the second motorcyclist killed on Cork roads in recent days. 

On Sunday evening a man in his 60s, named locally as Niall Murphy, from the Wilton Rd, was fatally injured following a single-vehicle collision which occurred at Glen South, Banteer.
