THE Society of St Vincent de Paul has applied for planning permission to develop new homes at a site in Cork city, amid a “much-needed requirement for additional accommodation”.

The application, lodged with Cork City Council, seeks permission for eight semi-detached bungalows at SVP’s site at Deerpark House at Friars’ Walk.

A document submitted with the application states that the proposed bungalows will be used to house clients of the SVP and will be built on the site of, and adjacent to, Deerpark House, which is run by the charity as a hostel for the homeless.

“St Vinent de Paul see a much-needed requirement for additional accommodation on the Deerpark site and the gated site will provide a secure and comfortable environment for the residents,” it says.

Planning permission was already received from Cork City Council for four residential units at the Deerpark site in December 2013, with the grant of permission extended until the end of January this year.

However, the extension date for the four units also lapsed during the period that SVP were being considered for Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS) funding for the eight units.

The revised scheme is said to match the design of the four units that received permission in 2013.

A pre-planning consultation, the document states, was held with Cork City Council for the eight-unit development in August 2022, “with general support for the proposed development”.

“It is envisaged that the proposed bungalows will provide a good and comfortable standard of accommodation for residents in a secure, safe, and attractive setting,” it adds.

Cork City Council is due to make decision on the application by May 13.
