Works are to begin immediately on a Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Bantry General Hospital in West Cork.
The decision to approve the construction of the stroke rehab unit comes after last year's green light for the endoscopy unit, marking a series of expansions aimed at enhancing the hospital's capacity to provide top-tier medical services.
Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South-West Christopher O’Sullivan welcomed the significant development for healthcare in the area, announcing that it had officially been approved for construction.
He explained that the approval follows comprehensive discussions with Bantry officials, hospital staff, and physiotherapists, emphasising the crucial role of the facility in the broader healthcare landscape.
“The green light for the rehabilitation unit at Bantry General Hospital underscores our commitment to enhancing healthcare services in the region," Mr O’Sullivan said.
“This is fantastic news, yet another addition to the incredible hospital that continues to go from strength to strength,” adding that Bantry General Hospital is increasingly becoming a sought-after destination for healthcare workers.
“Between the endoscopy unit, the rehab units, and the medical assessments unit, we're showing consultants, doctors, and nurses that there's every reason to come and work in this fantastic hospital.”
The Friends of Bantry General Hospital group, which set up by concerned citizens who could see the potential of enhancing care within the hospital, also welcomed the news.
In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for the group wrote:
“Confirmation has been given to management at Bantry General Hospital that funding has been secured and that construction can commence immediately.
“We are so lucky to have such a facility like Bantry General Hospital and this news further secures the future of the hospital. Well done to all involved in getting this going.”
