The Defence Forces have confirmed that "illegal substances and cash" have been discovered during a search in Collins Barracks, Cork.

The Defence Forces have confirmed that "illegal substances and cash" were discovered during a search in Collins Barracks, Cork.

A member of the Defence Forces has been arrested.

Following an investigation led by Military Police, a search of sections of the barracks was carried out, in collaboration with An Garda Síochána.

A Defence Forces spokesperson said: “During this operation, illegal substances and cash were discovered, leading to the arrest of a member of the Defence Forces."

They said that as a result the individual arrested is presently under investigation by An Garda Síochána.

“Additionally, a Defence Forces vehicle was handed over to An Garda Síochána for examination as part of this ongoing investigation," the spokesperson added.

“This is now a matter for An Garda Síochána and the Military Police will assist with the investigation.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s following the seizure of suspected drugs and cash near the Old Youghal Road in Cork on Wednesday evening, March 26 2024.

"The man is currently detained at Cork Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking Act) 1996.

"No further information is available at this time."
