More than 1500 people attended a free Holi event in Fitzgerald’s Park on Sunday 24 March, despite the Status Yellow Rain warning.

Holi is an Indian festival which celebrates the onset of spring and celebrates true diversity of India as people from all religions participate in this festival.

Holi celebrations took place all over the country, though the Cork event was the only free Holi event in Ireland.

There were food stalls from local businesses like Lavish, Myxtiq and Perked up Coffee, and attendees enjoyed the tunes of DJ Tushar.

The team that hosted Holi is the same team organizing Durga Puja Cork since 2017, which saw a footfall of 800 people last year.

Organiser Rohini Roy told The Echo, “This was the team’s first open air event and we were thrilled we got a chance to unite people of Cork – be it Indian or Irish, and hosted a truly multicultural event.

“The team of volunteers comprises Doctors, IT employees, Pharma employees and local businesspersons, with people attending from Limerick, Dublin, and even Westport.”

“A group of over 50 volunteers (all working professionals and students from UCC and MTU) made this event successful by working on this relentlessly for the last few weeks, despite all being full time students and workers,” she said.
