Cork teen charged with stabbings further remanded in detention

A CORK 15-year-old charged with stabbing three other teenagers in incidents at Glanmire and the Leisureplex in the city was remanded in detention for a fortnight.

He appeared by video link from Oberstown detention centre in Dublin at the Children’s Court in Cork yesterday, where Judge Joanne Carroll remanded him in detention until April 5, on the application of Inspector Brian O’Donovan to allow time for directions to be obtained from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The 15-year-old was refused bail when he was brought before Cork District Court on March 21.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said on that occasion: “There has to be some level of protection for members of the public where it is alleged these were completely unprovoked attacks.”

Detective Sergeant Kieran O’Sullivan objected to bail being granted to the juvenile, who cannot be named because of his age.

Det Sgt O’Sullivan said that on January 7 at Applegreen service station, Brooklodge, Glanmire, the first alleged incident occurred where the 15-year-old defendant was accused of stabbing an 18-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.

Det Sgt O’Sullivan said three teenagers were followed by a group of youths and attacked on their way home. The 18-year-old received two lacerations on his upper left arm/shoulder, one of which was quite deep. He also received a laceration on his left leg. His 16-year-old girlfriend received a laceration to a finger on her right hand which bled profusely. A 14-year-old received blows to the head and body.

The 15-year-old defendant was charged with assaulting the 14-year-old, and assault causing harm to the two other parties. He was also accused of having a knife.

Det Garda O’Sullivan also gave details of the alleged incident a 3pm on March 3 at the Leisureplex, MacCurtain Street, when the same defendant and another person allegedly attacked a teenager without provocation. He sustained a laceration to his left eye and stab wounds to his back, and a small kitchen blade was discarded at the scene.

The victim was there with his girlfriend at the time.
