THE community of Cobh has been left shocked following the death of a man who was seriously injured during an alleged stabbing incident last week.

Gardaí today confirmed that the man, aged in his 30s, had since died.

He has been named as Ian Baitson.

The man was seriously injured during an assault in a car park on Newtown Rd in Cobh at around 8.55pm on Friday.

He was taken to hospital where he was described as being in a critical condition, and he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

A Garda spokesperson said the results of a postmortem examination will determine the course of the investigation.

Gardaí investigating the assault said that an incident room has been established at Cobh Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer is leading the investigation.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to keep the family of the deceased updated.

In Cobh, Fine Gael councillor Sinéad Sheppard said the community is shocked by the news.

“The whole community in Cobh is shocked and saddened and, of course, we are thinking of the family of the deceased man, they’re in our thoughts right now,” said Ms Sheppard.

“We have such a close, fabulous community here in Cobh and we’re all just shocked. It’s just so incredibly sad and my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young man.”

Green Party councillor Alan O’Connor said he was sorry to hear the news of the man’s death and encouraged anyone who can assist gardaí in their investigation to come forward.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this incident to contact them.
