A CORK primary school marked the opening of a new building extension and special education teaching (SET) accommodation with a visit from Education Minister Norma Foley.

Scoil Mhuire na nGrást in Belgooly celebrated the opening of three new classrooms and SET accommodation yesterday with a musical showcase from students.

Established in 1979, and originally built to accommodate six students, Scoil Mhuire na nGrást now caters to more than 30 staff members, 358 pupils of 14 nationalities, and boasts 15 main classrooms, one special education classroom for children with autism, a sensory garden, two outdoor green spaces, and a recreational hall.

Described by Ms Foley as a “great uplift” for the school, the new extension, which was delivered under the Department of Education’s Devolved Grant Scheme, is the latest in a number of upgrades that the school has received over recent years.

We’re very fortunate to have this beautiful new extension and special education accommodation,” said Diarmuid Hennessy, principal at Scoil Mhuire na nGrást. “It’s about giving children opportunities for growth and learning.”

“These developments would not be possible without the support of the department, which we would like to acknowledge, as we’ve received tremendous support from them over the years.”

The official opening saw Ms Foley tour the Scoil Mhuire na nGrást campus, meeting with students and teachers — who were dressed as their favourite book characters for World Book Day — as well as local community members and parents to speak about the new development.

“It’s wonderful to be here on World Book Day to join the celebration of the new facilities in Scoil Mhuire na nGrást,” said Ms Foley.

“I want to express huge gratitude to the many hands and hearts who make education possible here every single day.”
