A MOTORIST travelling at 127km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N20 at Ballymartin in Blarney was among more than 900 drivers detected speeding during National Slow Down Day.

The event, aimed at reminding drivers of the dangers of speeding, took place from 7am on February 29 until 7am on Thursday morning.

Of the motorists detected speeding by members of the force and GoSafe, three drivers were subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, while another three drivers were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Among the examples of speeding detections in Cork during the National Slow Down Day, gardaí said a driver on the M8 at Riverstown in Glanmire was caught driving at 118km/h in a 100km/h zone.

A motorist on the N25 at Castleredmond in Midleton was detected driving at 95km/h in an 80km/h zone, and another on the N71 at Ballinvrinsig in Waterfall doing 110km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Commenting on the success of National Slow Down Day, a spokesperson for An Gardaí Síochána said: “The aim of National Slow Down Day was to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, to increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on our roads.”

Figures provided by the Road Safety Authority show that this year there have been 38 deaths recorded on Irish roads.

Of these, 15 were drivers, 13 passengers, seven were pedestrians, two were motorcyclists, and one was a cyclist.
