Update: A man in his 30s has been taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) following a serious incident on the M8 earlier today.

Shortly after 12 noon, Gardaí and emergency services responded to a single-vehicle road traffic incident involving a car on the motorway between Watergrasshill and the toll.

The driver of the car, a man is his 30s, was conveyed to CUH following the incident.

His injuries are understood to be serious.

A Garda spokesperson said:

“Today, on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, shortly after 12 noon, Gardaí and emergency services responded to a single-vehicle road traffic incident involving a car on the M8 near Junction 17.

“The driver, a male in his 30s who was the sole occupant of the car, was transported by ambulance to CUH. His injuries are reported to be serious.

“As a result of the incident, the M8 northbound is currently closed, with local diversions in effect.

“Investigations into the matter are underway.”

Earlier: A 'serious' incident on the M8 between Watergrasshill and the toll has led to the closure of a section of road.

Crews from Ballyvolane and Anglesea Street, as well as Gardaí and the National Ambulance Services are currently dealing with a road traffic collision on the M8 Northbound.

A Garda spokesperson told The Echo:

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic incident involving a car, which occurred on the M8 near Junction 17, today, Tuesday 13th February 2024 at approximately 12noon."

The M8 northbound is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

Investigations are ongoing.

Egis Lagan Services, who carries out maintenance on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) networks posted on X: 

"There is a serious incident on the M8 NB between J17 Watergrasshill and the toll. Traffic delays in the area, avoid if possible and divert at J18 Glanmire. The road is due to be closed soon, so all traffic will be diverted off at J18 NB"

TII have said the section of road has now closed and diversions are in place.
