Man found dead at Cork house named locally as brother of man murdered in 2018

A major garda investigation is underway after the body of a man who died in suspicious circumstances in sheltered accommodation in Macroom, Co Cork was found at lunchtime today.
The man has been named locally as 61-year-old Michael Foley, whose younger brother Timmy was murdered in the town in 2018.
Emergency services and gardaí attended at the scene at Annville in Barrett’s Place in the town at 1pm.
Mr Foley was found with visible head injuries.
Assistant State Pathologist Margot Bolster attended the scene this evening, along with members of the Garda forensic team.
A postmortem examination is due to take place at Cork University Hospital. Door to door enquiries are underway.
Gardaí also plan to examine CCTV footage from the area.
It is understood that Mr Foley had lived in the property for several years. He was originally from Clonakilty.
In a statement issued this afternoon, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said they were investigating the discovery of the man’s body at a residence in Macroom.
They said the body of the man remained at the scene, while the office of the State Pathologist had been notified.
An incident room has been set up at Macroom Garda Station. Anyone with information on the incident should contact gardaí in Macroom, Co Cork on 026 20590, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
Cork North West TD Aindrias Moynihan, a Macroom native, said people in the town were “shocked” by what unfolded yesterday.
He said his “sympathies are with the family” at this time.
Meanwhile, this is the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years. In October 2018 Timmy Foley – Michael’s brother - was stabbed 28 times by his 48-year-old ex-wife, Rita O’Driscoll.
In 2020 Ms O’Driscoll was jailed for life for his murder following a trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.

The jury of seven women and five men took just over six hours minutes to deliver their unanimous verdict.
In a victim impact statement the family of the late Timmy Foley thanked gardaí, the emergency services, the pathologist and the judge and jury.
They said that they were "heartbroken" following the loss of Timmy.
