Call to allow Cork community to transform derelict buildings

A LOCAL Election candidate has called for ‘meanwhile use’ projects to allow unoccupied buildings to be be used by business and community groups.

Christa Daley, Sinn Féin’s representative for the North East LEA has said this, along with the development of Kilbarry train station could help to transform the area.

Ms Daley told The Echo: “Blackpool boasts a rich history and distinctive character, holding vast potential to become a welcoming, sustainable, and diverse community. The hardworking efforts of existing community services and businesses are central to Blackpool’s potential.

“However, [Sinn Féin] believes that Cork City Council intervention is crucial to unlock this potential.

“Blackpool’s business community requires support and consultation to preserve its unique character and create opportunity. Public realm improvements are essential to stimulate increased comparison retail, ensuring economic activity flourishes.

“Addressing commercial and residential dereliction is a priority for me - you only have to walk through Blackpool and you will see countless derelict buildings and closed businesses. I find it extremely frustrating that so many historic places in the heart of Blackpool village are being left to rot.

“Initiatives like ‘meanwhile use projects’ could be piloted to revitalise vacant areas and bring Blackpool back to its former glory. This would allow small businesses and community groups to temporarily use vacant spaces.

“The development of Kilbarry Railway Station is a key step toward unlocking Blackpool’s full potential. I will continue to push for these recommendations to be taken on board because I believe that Blackpool village should be a great place to live and work.”
