Call for public to step up to help raise vital funds for two Cork hospitals

Frontline workers are calling for the public’s help as they fundraise to improve services at two Cork hospitals.

Healthcare staff have joined forces to hit the €20,000 target with dieticians, physiotherapists, porters and play specialists all signing up for a month-long steps challenge. 

The Walk in Their Shoes initiative is in aid of Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital. 

Sponsored by footwear giant Skechers, it challenges participants to match the steps of one of seven hospital workers during the month of March.

It is hoped that the collective effort will amount to over 3.7 million steps.

Head of Development and Marketing at the CUH Charity, Claire Concannon, is urging people to get involved.

“We want as many people as possible to celebrate the people who make a hospital run smoothly by walking in their shoes,” Ms Concannon said.

“You can match one of the team’s daily step counts for a month while raising vital funds for CUH and CUMH. By taking up the challenge you’ll support those in Munster who need both hospitals’ vital services. You will also help enhance equipment and facilities.”

Managing Director of Skechers Ireland, Paul Gallagher said the company is “honoured” to support the cause “which not only promotes an active lifestyle but also recognises the extraordinary efforts of the healthcare heroes at Cork University Hospital”.

Visit idonate.ie/event/walkintheirshoes to sign up. People can then select a hospital worker and match their steps. More than €1,000 has been raised through the fundraiser to date. Those unable to complete the challenge also have an option to donate.

Established in 2012, the CUH Charity works closely with the management team and healthcare experts at CUH and CUMH to identify the hospital’s most pressing needs. It provides financial support for all departments through a number of focused appeals. 

The organisation is comprised of volunteers, hospital staff and charity representatives, and strives to promote community involvement with fundraising opportunities to help the hospitals.
