Cillian Murphy is nominated for best actor alongside Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.

Cillian Murphy learned of his Oscar nomination while home in Cork and celebrated the news with some tea and cake.

Earlier today, it was announced that Murphy has been nominated for best actor for his performance as J Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist described as the father of the atomic bomb, in Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic Oppenheimer.

He is nominated alongside Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.

Murphy told Variety that he was in his childhood kitchen when the nominations were announced this afternoon.

"We’ve had a few days off and I’ve been at home, which has been very, very pleasant. I’m actually in my parents’ house in Cork city. I was with my parents and my wife today. So that was really nice.”

He added: “We had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. It was quite nice. My mom made a sponge cake. It was very tasty.”

The Cork actor has already been nominated for a Bafta and an SAG award for the performance and has won a Golden Globe.

Oppenheimer picked up 13 nominations in all including for best picture and best director.

Poor Things, co-produced by Ireland's Element Pictures, scored 11 nods in total, including best picture.

Congratulating Murphy on the Oscar's nod today, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said "Delighted to see Irish talent being recognised in this year’s #Oscars nominations, with Cillian Murphy in the Best Actor category and Poor Things receiving several nominations. Another great success for Irish cinema. Comhghairdeas."

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin also congratulated Cillian Murphy and Element Pictures saying "brilliant to see Irish talent recognised on this prestigiious stage".

Nominations for the 96th Oscars were announced by Atlanta star Zazie Beetz and The Boys actor Jack Quaid, ahead of the annual ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
