Progress report needed for case against man accused of breaking into Cork pub and shop

A REPORT on the progress of the investigation into the case against a man accused of breaking into a pub and a shop in Cork city will have to be presented to court on February 1.

Defence solicitor, Eddie Burke, said that the defendant was very anxious for there to be progress in the case, as soon as possible, but, now, again, at Cork District Court, there were still no directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Judge Mary Dorgan directed that a progress report would be required to update the court on February 1 on the process of getting directions from the DPP.

Tony Coffey, of no fixed address in Cork and originally from Tralee, was remanded in custody until that date.

He is accused of breaking into the Wetherspoons Linen Weaver pub in Cork city at 3am to steal drink and then of forcing his way into a nearby store to steal beer.

Garda David Murphy originally arrested and brought him before Cork District Court, where there was an objection to bail.

The two burglary charges relate to the early hours of Thursday, November 30.

Garda Murphy said, in his bail objection, that it was alleged that after 3am on November 30 last, the accused went to a side door of the Linen Weaver pub, on Paul Street, Cork, that he entered, and stole three bottles of spirts valued at €150.

It was alleged that, after 5am on the same date at Herlihy’s Centra on St Patrick’s Street, there was a burglary by a man seen prising open the front door with his hands.

The premises were closed, but there was a member of staff upstairs, getting ready for the day ahead. Eight cans of beer were stolen.
