Man accused of breaking into Cork city centre pub and shop remanded in custody

A 35-year-old man accused of breaking into the Wetherspoons Linen Weaver pub in Cork city at three o’clock in the morning to steal drink and then forcing his way into a nearby store to steal beer was remanded in custody until January 18.

Sergeant Pat Lyons said directions had not yet been received from the Director of Public Prosecutions in the case.

Judge Dorgan agreed to the state application to remand the accused in custody to allow for directions to be obtained.

Garda David Murphy originally arrested Tony Coffey of no fixed address in Cork and originally from Tralee and brought him before Cork District Court where there was an objection to bail.

The two burglary charges relate to the early hours of Thursday November 30.

Garda Murphy said in his bail objection that it was alleged that after 3am on November 30 the accused went to a side door of the Linen Weaver pub, on Paul Street, Cork, that he entered and stole three bottles of spirts valued €150 .

It was alleged that after 5am on the same date at Herlihy’s Centra on Patrick Street there was a burglary by a man seen prising open the front door with is hands. 

The premises was closed to the public at the time but there was a member of staff upstairs getting ready for the day ahead. He stole eight cans of beer.

Eddie Burke, defence solicitor, said the defendant was very anxious for there to be progress in the case as soon as possible.
