Delivery of bus shelters needed to encourage public transport usage

THE Labour Party candidate in the South East Ward, Peter Horgan, has received confirmation for the provision of bus shelters in Maryborough Woods but said that delivery of the shelters is needed now to encourage and support public transport usage.

In a response, NTA deputy chief executive Hugh Creegan said it is collaborating with Cork City Council under the CycleConnects Ireland Programme to develop an extensive cycling network, which he said envisages the delivery of a secondary cycle route along Maryborough Woods and Greendale Road, linking with the primary network along Carrigaline Road and Maryborough Hill.

It is intended that these environmental improvement works will include traffic calming measures, segregated cycle lanes, new footpaths and improvements to the existing bus stops including the provision of bus shelters at Maryborough Woods Road.

“The basic provision of bus shelters is critical in supporting people who use the bus and for encouraging more people to see the bus as an option,” said Mr Horgan.

“It’s very welcome that we now have clarity on the shelters for Maryborough Woods but now we need to ensure that they are delivered and delivered soon.

“Increasing public transport usage is not just about route corridors it’s about the entire public transport experience through faster on boarding, next gen ticketing and the provision of adequate bus shelter ”.
