A CONTRACT has been signed for the initial phase of the €3.8 million West Cork Greenway Project.

The project is being developed by Cork County Council as part of its ongoing commitment to developing greenways across the county, in line with the governments National Development Plan (NDP).

Consultant AECOM-ROD Alliance have been appointed technical advisors for the first phase of the initiative, which will take the Skibbereen section from concept and feasibility through to the statutory process.

If deemed feasible, it is proposed that all routes will originate in Skibbereen and connect to communities in Baltimore, Schull and Drimoleague.

Funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and valued at €3.8m, Cork County Council said the project presents a unique opportunity to develop safe and attractive greenways in West Cork.

The Mayor County Cork, Cllr Frank O’Flynn, said that once complete the West Cork Greenway Project would offer a safe and enjoyable active travel route for local communities along its route.

“It will provide a more cost- effective alternative to the private car for commuting and has the potential to attract domestic and international visitors to come, explore, and stay in this extraordinarily scenic and much loved part of our county."

The chief executive of Cork County Council, Valerie O’Sullivan said the project formed part of an overall vision and strategy for the development of an integrated network of active travel routes, greenways and blueways, as outdoor recreational amenities, for the region.

“We look forward to working with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the AECOM-ROD Alliance to develop this exciting project for West Cork."

It is envisaged that, subject to funding being made available by government, the project will progress through the various stages of development over the next five years.
