A GRANT of €50,000 to design a pedestrian bridge over the River Sullane in Macroom has been described by a local TD as further evidence that the Government recognises the importance of enhancing the town centre in the post-bypass era.

Cork North West Fine Gael TD Michael Creed said the proposed new bridge would link the northern section of the town park with its southern section on the opposite bank of the Sullane.

The TD said that the funding announcement by Community Development Minister Heather Humphreys would pave the way for a bridge which would benefit Macroom residents as well as visitors to the town, following the opening of the N22 bypass which removes heavy traffic from the town centre.

“The Sullane Pedestrian Bridge project is one of dozens of projects to be delivered nationwide under the ORIS scheme, which is an initiative of the Department of Rural and Community Development,” he said.

“Each project will receive funding of up to €50,000 to bring them to a shovel-ready stage, when they will be in a position to secure further funding through the other measures of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

“Funding for the delivery of projects under the other measures of the scheme will be announced by Minister Heather Humphreys early next year.”

The former minister for agriculture, food and the marine said that the Government’s rural development policy, titled ‘Our Rural Future’, had enabled “record investment in outdoor amenities at a level never before seen in Ireland”.

“It’s also part of Fine Gael’s commitment to ensuring stronger, safer communities and making our rural towns and villages places that people can work, live, and raise a family,” said Mr Creed.
