A young man was jailed for 18 months after he was caught with €54,000 worth of cannabis in January 2021.
Detective Garda Robert Kennedy charged 26-year-old Conor Casey of Mount St. Joseph’s, Bakers Road, Gurranabraher, Cork, with charges of including having cannabis for sale or supply at the Amber filling station on Bandon Road when its street value exceeded €13,000 – the threshold figure for a minimum sentence of ten years unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Defence barrister Brendan Kelly said of Mr Casey, “He has distanced himself from certain individuals. He would be easily led in certain situations. He is a relatively vulnerable person.”
Det. Garda Kennedy said the drugs were detected in a vehicle shortly before 7 p.m. on January 5 2021 at the Amber filling station.
“Mr Casey was arrested and detained at Togher garda station. He initially tried to distance himself from it but he later admitted his role was to hand the cannabis over to another (unnamed) male.
“He had a €7,000 drug debt and he was acting out of fear of an unidentified third party,” the detective said.
Judge Colin Daly sentenced him to three years in prison with the last 18 months suspended at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
