Hoax threat received by Cork school dealt with 'in line with appropriate protocols'

Gardaí confirmed to the Echo that members of the force responded and established a cordon in the surrounding area.

The Midleton-based educational institution which received a threat via email earlier today that was later deemed as a hoax has been confirmed as St Colman's Community College.

A spokesperson for Cork Education and Training Board (ETB) said the matter was dealt with as per the appropriate protocols.

“I can confirm that the school made contact with An Garda Síochána today in response to a hoax threat received by the school.

“The matter was dealt with in line with appropriate protocols to ensure the safety of all those attending the school.

“An Garda Síochána responded to the incident and were present at the school today.

“Following an assessment by An Garda Síochána, in conjunction with the school authorities, it was deemed that there was no risk to the health and safety of anyone in the school community and the school continued for the remainder of the day,” they said.

“School management contacted the parents to inform them of the incident and to reassure them of the safety of their children,” the spokesperson continued.

Earlier:

Gardaí, armed detectives and the Armed Support Unit were called to a Cork educational institution earlier today following the receipt of a threat. 

The incident happened at a facility in Midleton this morning. 

Gardaí confirmed to The Echo that members of the force responded and established a cordon in the surrounding area. 

Following enquiries, gardaí said that they were satisfied that the threat was a hoax. 

The area has now been declared safe. 

In a statement, gardaí said: "Gardaí received a report of a threat made via email towards an educational institution in Midleton, Co. Cork this morning, Tuesday 7th November 2023.

"With assistance from the Armed Support Unit, armed detective and frontline gardaí attended the scene and established a cordon in the surrounding area.

"The area was canvassed and following further enquiries An Garda Síochána is satisfied that the threat has been deemed as a hoax and the area has been declared safe.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
