Children attending the Baile Beag creche at Ard Bhaile Community Centre in Mayfield are set to benefit from a newly renovated outdoor play area.
The renovations at the centre, managed by Newbury House Family Centre, were funded by the ‘Welcome To City Grant’ under the Community Recognition Fund administered by the Community Culture and Placemaking Directorate Cork City Council.
The grant supports the development of community infrastructure and facilities in recognition of the contribution being made by communities across the country in welcoming and hosting significant numbers of arrivals from Ukraine and other countries.

Speaking at the launch of the newly renovated play area, Manager of Newbury House, Rosella Sheehan said that the renovation of the outdoor area “has made a huge difference to the children who attend the crèche as it has given the staff access to another usable, colourful, and interactive safe outdoor space that they can use every day no matter what the weather”.
Ms Sheehan added:
The allocation of the ‘Welcome to the City’ grant was supported by all local city councillors in the North East ward, the Local Community Development Committee (LCDC), the Community Response Forum, and was in conjunction with local community groups and community associations.
The Cork City Council received over €1.1 million under the Community Recognition Fund 2023 and allocated it as part of their broader Welcome to the City Initiative.

The Community Recognition Fund 2023 is supported by Department of Rural and Community Development, Our Rural Future and Project Ireland 2040.
The ‘Welcome to the City’ campaign aims to visibly demonstrate that Cork is open to and welcoming of people of all abilities, nationalities, genders, sexual orientations, races, ages, and religions, reassuring visitors and new residents alike, that there is a place here in Cork city for them.
