Flooding reported in Cork city as council urges public to avoid some areas

Flooding has been reported in parts of Cork city again this evening.

South Mall is amongst the areas affected with Cork City Council urging people to avoid the area if possible.

Lavitt's Quay is closed to traffic as a result of the floods, with other problematic areas including Rutland Street and South Terrace.

High tide this evening was at 5.42pm and in its latest update Cork City Council said the tide had reduced to 2.57m, down from 2.7m, but added that its "crews are still out across the city assissting road users".

The flooding was expected and earlier today Cork City Council had warned the public that “significant tidal flooding’ would occur as a result of forecasted super spring tides.

A spokesperson for the local authority appealed to people to be mindful of their safety during the expected flooding. 

"As the city centre is busy for the Jazz Weekend, Cork City Council and the emergency services ask those attending to be mindful of their own safety and the safety of others during the flooding period this evening. Please queue in a safe manner and follow any guidance from Cork City Council Staff and members of the emergency services who will be on site. We are working to ensure your Jazz Weekend is as safe and as enjoyable as possible," the spokesperson said.
