Cork city bracing itself for further floods

Cork City Council is warning motorists against parking in areas of low-lying quays this evening amid fears of potential floods.

Motorists are believed to be at particular risk between 5pm and 7pm. 

It follows a meeting of Cork City Council’s Flood Assessment team this morning to review the forecasted super spring tides over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The council said the high tides will result in significant tidal flooding in low-lying areas of Cork City Centre at high tide this evening.

People travelling into the city centre for the Jazz Weekend are asked to plan their journeys and give extra time to complete them as several road closures and lane restrictions will be necessary. 

Diversions will be put in place to ensure the safe flow of traffic. 

Cork City Council has pledged to ease restrictions as appropriately and quickly as possible to minimise disruptions. 

Road users are asked to plan their journeys, travel with caution and follow diversional signage. 

The tidal flooding event will last approximately two hours, commencing at around 5pm with flood waters expected to recede by around 7pm.

Members of the emergency services who will be on-site and the situation will be monitored throughout the critical period.

Wandesford Quay and Sharman Crawford Street will be closed from 5 p.m. this evening and will reopen when tidal flooding subsides.

Streets set to be affected by the event include:

• South Terrace;
• Sawmill Street;
• Rutland Street;
• White Street;
• South Mall;
• Oliver Plunkett Street and all its side streets;
• Phoenix Street;
• Pembroke Street;
• Crane Lane;
• Winthrop Street;
• Union Quay;
• Morrisons’ Island;
• Wandesford Quay;
• Lavitt’s Quay.
• Crosses’ Green
