‘Significant tidal flooding’ expected in parts of Cork city

Cork City Council is warning the public that “significant tidal flooding’ is expected in parts of Cork this evening.

The expected flooding comes as a result of forecasted super spring tides.

The Council’s Flood Assessment team met on Saturday to discuss the forecasted tides over the Bank Holiday weekend which the council said “will result in significant tidal flooding in low-lying areas of Cork city centre at high tide this evening.

High tide this evening is at 6.01pm, while high tides tomorrow are at 6.21am and 6.42pm.

Wandesford Quay and Sharman Crawford Street will be closed from 5pm this evening and will reopen when the tidal flooding subsides.

Other affected areas are likely to include:

• South Terrace;
• South Mall;
• Oliver Plunkett Street;
• Winthrop Street;
• Union Quay;
• Morrisons’ Island;
• Wandesford Quay;
• Lavitt’s Quay.

Cork City Council appealed to users travelling into the city centre for the Jazz Weekend to plan their journeys and give extra time to complete their journeys as several road closures and lane restrictions will be necessary.

“Diversions will be put in place to ensure traffic can still circulate. Any restrictions will be eased as appropriate. Road users are asked to plan their journeys and to travel with caution and follow diversional signage,” a spokesperson said.

The council said that the situation will continue to be monitored.
