CARRIGALINE-BASED teacher Úna McCarthy has filled the vacancy on Cork County Council left following the resignation of former Fine Gael councillor Michael Paul Murtagh.

Her nomination was put before Fine Gael party members last Sunday evening, with Cllr McCarthy’s formal co-option taking place at Monday’s full meeting of Cork County Council.

Originally from Rochestown, Cllr McCarthy is a secondary school teacher at St Peter’s Community School in Passage West, where she teaches business and accounting and serves as an assistant principal.

Cllr McCarthy lives in Carrigaline with her husband and two children, where she is involved in the local community through the residents’ association and coaching duties with Carrigaline GAA club.

She thanked Fine Gael party members for the nomination, which she described as a “huge honour and privilege”.

“I am committed to working hard to deliver for our local area and for Fine Gael. Schools are a microcosm of society, and as a teacher I see at first hand the daily impact of many of the issues currently facing our country,” said Cllr McCarthy.

“As a party, Fine Gael works to find solutions to these issues and make life better for everyone in our communities. As a public representative I will work every day to be part of the solution,” she added.
