"There is wasted water, there are breaks, there are people suffering. That capital investment needs to be made," said the councillor.

A major water main serving Bandon needs to be urgently replaced in a project that could cost an estimated €20m, a local councillor has said.

Fianna Fáil councillor Gillian Coughlan called for the trunk main running from Innishannon to Bandon to be placed at the top of Uisce Éireann’s priority list.

She raised the issue at a recent meeting of Cork County Council’s Western Divisional Committee. Ms Coughlan said the main had suffered repeated breaks, resulting in water being wasted and disruption for local residents.

“The trunk main from Innishannon to Bandon needs to be replaced urgently. There is wasted water, there are breaks, there are people suffering. That capital investment needs to be made.”

Ms Coughlan referred to an estimated cost of €20m, although she said the precise cost of replacing the main was not known. She asked the council to write to Uisce Éireann calling for the project to be prioritised.

“It needs to be put to the top of the priority list,” she said.
