CORK County Council will continue to monitor the levels of the Owenacurra River in Midleton as its staff remain at a local co-ordination centre throughout the weekend.

Water levels abated in the area last night, but remained high as repair works to roads and bridges continued and a large-scale clean-up effort gained momentum.

With high river levels and more rain expected, members of the public are advised to stay high, dry, and away from the coast, rivers, and lakes.

Yesterday’s visit to Midleton by Environment Minister Eamon Ryan was described as “too little, too late” by some local people speaking to The Echo who are reeling from the destruction of Storm Babet after floods battered the East Cork town on Wednesday.

Some voiced outrage at the delays in implementing an effective flood relief scheme which they said may have spared residents from the devastation caused by the deluge.

Mr Ryan expressed his sorrow for home and business owners affected. “They will be heartbroken,” he said. “There is nothing worse than a flood and all its destruction. My heart goes out to them.”

Minister Ryan described how climate change is wreaking more havoc than ever before when addressing reporters at Midleton Fire Station yesterday.

“The sad reality is that climate change is real and it’s getting more pronounced. It’s hitting home”.

He praised those who played a part in reducing the impact of the destruction.

“It’s very important to meet the fire service and the local council. There is a lot of rain forecast for Sunday and early Monday. That’s going to be a challenge. We have to make sure that we prepare for that but also help the clean-up. I need to help the businesses and help the householders in whatever way I can”.

The council is offering free disposal of flood-damaged goods at all Civic Amenity Sites until Thursday, October 26.

Cork County Council can be contacted over the weekend via its emergency number on 021 4800048.
