Drunk man arrested after falling asleep in Cork city betting shop

Staff at a Paddy Power’s bookmakers called the gardaí when they encountered a drunken man who fell asleep at their premises.

Garda Shane McCarthy found a man asleep in Paddy Power’s bookmakers on Paul Street. He was unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred. He was arrested for his own safety.

37-year-old Stuart Donovan of 199 Farranferris Avenue, Farranree, Cork, admitted the charge of being drunk and a source of danger to himself or others on August 2 2023 at Paul Street, Cork.

Defence solicitor, Eddie, Burke, acknowledged the prosecution evidence that the defendant had 13 previous convictions for the same offence.

But Mr Burke said of the accused, “He is back on track now.” 

Judge Olann Kelleher convicted and fined him €200 for the August offence.
