Cork school treats shoppers to impromptu performance ahead of open night

PUPILS of a Cork primary school treated shoppers at Douglas Village to an impromptu performance ahead of their open night this week.

Rather than promote their open night solely online, pupils from Scoil Bhríde Eglantine decided to take the show on tour to highlight everything the facility has to offer. The open night, which takes place tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm is set to showcase some of the school’s best assets including a school garden where pupils can grow vegetables to use in soups, quiches and other dishes.

The girls performed a variety of party pieces for shoppers on the day and wowed passers-by with their renditions of Molly Malone and Ireland’s Call.

Teacher Rosie O’Shea, who joined the children at the Douglas Shopping Village showcase, spoke about what their school has to offer.

“We have a school council where pupil reps speak up and help resolve any difficulties their fellow students are having”, she said. “There is also a real love of music at the school and the children have the chance to write their own songs and perform them in an event we organise known as the “Schoolovision”. Eglantine also has a small orchestra and a choir so there’s something for everyone”.

Eglantine National School staff are known for going beyond the call of duty to create an interactive learning environment for their students.

The school came to media prominence most recently last June when they invited a Harry Styles impersonator to celebrate the end of term. The school also made headlines last June when rugby star Peter O’Mahony visited the school with the URC Cup.

The celebration came hot on the heels of the province's landmark South African victory. Peter’s daughter Indie was among 400 pupils at Scoil Bhríde Eglantine national school in Douglas who gathered at the school’s assembly hall for a glimpse of the coveted silverware.
