A Cork teenager who has been angling since he was six years of age has been selected to coKevinmpete for Ireland in two world fishing competitions.

Shanagarry’s Kevin Roche, 18, first started fishing in Ballycotton when he was just six years of age began competing in the sport two years ago.

Next week Kevin, who is supported by Irish offshore survey company Green Rebel, heads off to the Netherlands where he will be in action at the Shore Angling World Junior Championships on the coast of Zeeland. These weeklong championships get underway on Saturday, October 14.

When he returns to Ireland, Kevin will have to shift his focus to competing on Ireland’s Under 21 team when the World Boat Angling Championships cast off in Crosshaven between November 4-11. Next August, Kevin will be angling for Ireland in Under 21 World Boat Championship which is taking place in Donegal.

Kevin may have a bit of an edge in that competition as he was crowned All Ireland Under 21 Champion at the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers’ Boat Competition in Rathmullen, Co. Donegal, last month.

The Leaving Cert student at Midleton CBS is considering a career in the marine sector. He said it was a huge opportunity to be part of the Irish team and to be supported by an ambitious company like Green Rebel.

“My passion is the sea,” said Kevin. “I don’t know many young people who are considering a career in fishing or the marine sector, but for me there is nothing like it.

“The conditions in the Netherlands will be quite similar to Ireland for the shore angling competition and we will be fishing for bass, flounder, dab and dogfish.

Green Rebel founder Pearse Flynn said the company was proud to support ‘local champions’ on the sea.

“Kevin is a familiar sight fishing from Ballycotton Pier and Garryvoe Beach often late into the night or very early in the morning.

“Kevin’s work ethic, incredible dedication to his craft and ambition to make a career on the sea is inspiring and we know that he will go far.”
