Community service for drunken passenger who fell asleep on the bus

A bus driver who could not remove a drunken passenger who fell asleep in the bus called at a garda station to get assistance in dealing with the matter.

Now at Cork District Court, the man who caused this problem has pleaded guilty to public order charges arising out of what happened.

Eddie Burke solicitor said on behalf of the accused man, Nigel Murray: 

"He was drunk on the bus. And he was awoken. He apologises. He is a 32-year-old man originally from Cobh.” 

Nigel Murray of 87 Frenches Avenue, Cobh, was ordered to do community service to avoid a jail term for his behaviour.

On the night of the incident Garda Kate Bohane was approached in the public office of Anglesea Street by a bus driver who stated that a man was asleep on the bus.

On arrival, Garda Bohane woke the man and observed that he was intoxicated. He became abusive and shouted at the garda and was arrested at the scene.

Judge Olann Kelleher convicted and fined him €200 for being drunk and a source of danger and ordered him to do 150 hours of community service instead of two months in prison for being threatening and abusive.
