Residents of Blackpool recently founded a tidy village group to tackle the ongoing litter issues in the area.

Residents in Blackpool have joined forces to help tackle ongoing litter issues in the area.

More than 30 locals attended the inaugural meeting of the newly established Blackpool Tidy Village group recently at Blackpool Community Centre.

This group hopes not only to tackle litter but to improve the green spaces in the local area.

Green Party Cork City North West Local Area Representative Louise Jordan told the Echo that tackling the litter issue was a massive talking point for those in attendance.

“The litter issue was highlighted at our public meeting by the majority of people. The outcome then was to put a tidy village group together.

“From now on we are going to meet at the Community Centre at 10:30am every Saturday, and the group will go out and pick the litter up and we will bring the bags back to the centre, which the [City] Council will collect on the following Monday,” Ms Jordan said.

Other aspects of the Tidy Village group include the inclusion of green spaces, looking after the river and a potential museum in the old Hewitt’s Building.

T&A Building Supplies contributed to the cause by providing litter picks, high-visibility vests and gloves.

The local Men’s Shed will be creating planters and similar structures to spruce up the area.

“We would encourage everyone to come along, and we are hoping that different areas like Dublin Hill and Spring Lane will set up their own little groups.

“We will keep the core going from the centre so everyone feels supported,” Ms Jordan concluded.

If you wish to join the team call Tony Holton on 0892627883 or come to the weekly meeting at 10:30am every Saturday in the Blackpool Community Centre.
