THE Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn has officially opened Bandon’s new state-of-the-art playground.

The new facility includes embankment slides, a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and sensory play panels.

The Bandon Play Park project was brought to fruition through efforts from Bandon Playground Group CLG, along with support from Cork County Council’s West Cork LCDC/LAG and Avondhu Blackwater Partnership CLG.

The facility had a total cost of €264,985 including LEADER funding of €105,869.

In addition to LEADER funding, the Bandon Playground Group CLG received support from the Council’s Bandon Kinsale Municipal District, as well as securing philanthropic support of €100,000 from the Tomar Trust.

The playground is located within walking distance of the town centre via the Graham Norton Bandon River Walkway and is adjacent to the existing skate park.

The site was donated by Cork Marts to the Bandon Playground Group CLG and the people of Bandon and its surrounding hinterland.

Speaking at the opening, Mayor O’Flynn said the facility would “enrich” the lives of local families.

“This remarkable project has been the result of unwavering dedication, tireless effort, and a true sense of community collaboration.

“This facility will not only enrich the lives of many families in Bandon area, but also serves as an attraction for visitors to the area. I would like to congratulate everyone that contributed to this remarkable new amenity.”

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey added, “Cork County Council is committed to supporting initiatives that enhance the well-being of our residents, bringing people together, breaking down social barriers, and promoting pride in our community.

“This project is a credit to Bandon Playground Group and the wider community who have demonstrated remarkable community involvement by raising significant co-funding to make this excellent facility a reality.”
