Cork school bus service restored for the morning run
Parents of schoolchildren attending Rathduff National School and Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney, were informed on Monday that the school bus service, which had been suspended at short notice last Thursday evening, will resume on Tuesday.
A CORK school bus service which was suspended late last week, giving parents only 12 hours’ notice that they would need to find alternative transportation for their children, will be restored from this morning.
Parents of schoolchildren attending Rathduff National School and Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney, were informed on Monday that the school bus service, which had been suspended at short notice last Thursday evening, will resume today.
They had been told by email after 8.30pm last Thursday evening that the C930 Blarney and Grenagh bus service would not run the following morning and would not operate “until further notice”.
On Friday, Bus Éireann told the service had been “temporarily suspended at short notice due to an operational issue” and promised to inform the “families impacted as soon as a suitable resource is available”.
On Monday, parents were informed the C390 route would be reinstated the following morning, Tuesday 12 September, news which a spokesperson for Bus Éireann confirmed to .
“The service will be back operating from tomorrow morning and parents have been notified accordingly,” they said.
Welcoming the news, independent Cork city councillor Kenneth O’Flynn, who represents the Cork north-east ward, said that while it was good that Bus Éireann had moved so quickly to resolve the issue, it was “unacceptable” the service had ever been suspended.
“If we have one child’s education disrupted for a day, it’s not acceptable.
"As I said before, Bus Éireann had months to prepare for children returning to school, and it shouldn’t have had to come to this.
“I believe that if it hadn’t been for the political pressure, and the pressure from the parents and the fourth estate, we might not have had any result at all,” Cllr O’Flynn said.
Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central Thomas Gould said the announcement was great news for parents and children in the area badly affected by the temporary suspension of the service.
“It highlights huge issues in a system that is completely over capacity and for which no ‘Plan B’ currently seems to exist.
“It was great that Bus Éireann worked so quickly to resolve this but there are still huge numbers of parents in areas like Glenville, Upper Glanmire and others without transport that need resolution,” Mr Gould said.
