Cork City Fire Brigade is currently dealing with a building fire on Western Road in Cork city.

A woman is in critical condition in Cork University Hospital (CUH) following a fire in Cork city today.

Four units of Cork City Fire Brigade responded to a fire at the Acton Lodge bed and breakfast on the Western Road in Cork city just after 11am this morning.

A woman in her 30s was recovered at the scene and removed to hospital under garda escort.

Gerry Myers, third officer with Cork City Fire Brigade, told The Echo the fire service had received a report at 11.12am that one person was missing in an upstairs bedroom which was on fire.

“We arrived within five minutes, at 11.17am, and two search and rescue teams were deployed, and they recovered a woman in her early thirties,” Mr Myers said.

“She was brought out and handed over to the National Ambulance Service, and she was critical at that stage.

“She was removed under garda escort to the CUH,” Mr Myers said.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochána described the woman’s condition as critical.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Cork City Fire Brigade has urged members of the public to use caution on approach to the Western Road.
