MALLOW is to stage a 5km free weekly parkrun from February in the Town Park.

Organisers have teamed up with parkrun.ie for the event which is one of several being held around the country each weekend. Ballincollig’s regularly attracts up to 300 people.

Every Saturday from 9.30am participants will do a loop of the town and park before heading west along the riverbank, under the local bridges and then turn north. One more loop around the town park completes the route.

The course has been measured by John Holland of Mallow Athletics Club and will be the county’s eighth park run to be established.

The town’s first official parkrun will take place on February 2. The town park is prone to flooding so some Saturdays may be cancelled.

Parkrun.ie organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. It began in Ireland in 2012 with the first running of Malahide parkrun.

Junior parkrun events for children aged between four and 14 are also held around the country.

Contact john.kissane@parkrun.ie for details of the event in Mallow.
