AN award of €5,000 is to be made to an emerging artist in the memory of barrister Jane Anne Rothwell.

Ms Rothwell died last year after an illness. She had been the chairwoman of the Cork Midsummer Festival from 2013 and 2018.

Now, an open call has been made to emerging artists in Cork for the inaugural Jane Anne Rothwell award. Funding of €5,000 will be given each year to an emerging artist who is from Cork or based in Cork and identifies as female. The call is open to artists working in any discipline.

“This is an opportunity for an artist at an early stage of their career to present something that may be small in scale but large in intent as part of the 25th edition of the Cork Midsummer Festival,” Director of the festival, Lorraine Maye, said. According to the Cork Midsummer Festival organisers, “the award will support bold and innovative projects that respond to the city of Cork — whether that involves traditional arts venues, surprising site-specific locations, diverse communities, the city’s history, geography, politics, or its people.”

This year’s successful artist will be given the award to “realise an event” to be part of next year’s festival.

A statement added: “The award will support bold and innovative projects that respond to the city of Cork — whether that involves traditional arts venues, surprising site-specific locations, diverse communities, the city’s history, geography, politics, or its people.”

Applications must have a short cover letter containing personal details and statement of intent, why this award would be useful at this stage of their career and an outline of no more than 5,000 words about their proposed project. A preliminary budget must also be included, along with a CV and three examples of previous work. Applications must be made by email to info@corkmidsummer.com.

Applications must be lodged by July 31.
