The official unveiling took place today of a mural at the North Monastery School, Fairhill, dedicated to the memory of Tomas MacCurtain, Terence MacSwiney (his successor as Lord Mayor, and also a past pupil of the school), and other famous alumni, including figures such as former Taoiseach Jack Lynch and all-Ireland winning captain of the Cork hurling team, Tomas Mulcahy.

The mural is just the start of a series of events planned this year to celebrate the centenary. 

The centenary programme will involve both primary and secondary students of the North Monastery schools, led by second-levels pupils involved in the History Club. 

Fionnuala MacCurtain, grand-daughter of Tomas and Cathal MacSwiney Brugha (grandson of both Terence MacSwiney and Cathal Brugha) were in attendance, as was Tomas Mulcahy,  relatives of Jack Lynch and artist Alan Hurley.

The mural was officially unveiled by Lord Mayor John Sheehan.
