There has been an emotional homecoming for Micheál Martin this afternoon, as the newly-elected Taoiseach of the 33rd Dáil made the journey home to Ballinlough.

Neighbours and friends had put up bunting and balloons to celebrate Mr Martin's new position and lined the street for his arrival.

Mr Martin's family remained home while he went to the Dáil and then Áras an Uachtaráin yesterday.

His wife Mary spoke movingly of the emotion involved in thinking of all the support they have received over the years and the joy of watching his election to the role unfold on television yesterday.
