Lidl Ireland has announced plans to expand its network of stores in Cork.

A planning application has been lodged for a new state-of-the-art store as part of a wider development in Blarney.

If approved, the new store will expand the retailer’s Cork portfolio to 21 stores.

Lidl said that in conjunction with the landowner, it is working with architects and planners to create a bespoke design in keeping with the area to ensure that the new development will contribute positively to Blarney.

The development includes a café so customers can enjoy a coffee before or after their weekly shop.

The planned store will also incorporate a range of sustainability features including an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system.

The retailer also plans to include a green roof in the development.

Partially covered in vegetation, the green roof absorbs rainwater and provides insulation reducing the need for in store drainage systems.

Lidl says brand-new store, if approved, will create 30 new local jobs with the retailer in Blarney, while the café on site will create 10 new jobs.
