High numbers waiting on beds in Cork hospitals this morning

It comes as hospitals in Cork brace themselves for potential cases of COVID-19.

Almost 90 people on trolleys at Cork hospitals A staggering 89 admitted patients are waiting for beds at hospitals in Cork this morning.

Figures published by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) show 54 patients are on trolleys at Cork University Hospital. 

Another 20 patients are waiting for beds at the Mercy University Hospital while 15 patients are waiting at Bantry General Hospital.

Nationally, 509 admitted patients are waiting for beds at hospitals around the country. University Hospital Limerick- where 58 patients are waiting on trolleys - is worst affected.

It comes as hospitals in Cork brace themselves for potential cases of COVID-19.

Last week, a leading Cork expert in emergency medicine and public health warned that overcrowding in Cork emergency departments (EDs) would make preventing any potential coronavirus outbreak very difficult.

Dr Chris Luke, consultant in emergency medicine and adjunct senior lecturer in public health at UCC, said that while hospital staff are well-trained to deal with a coronavirus case or cases, overcrowding would impact infection prevention and control measures in the event of a coronavirus (Covid-19) case.
